Train by Learning to Follow Jesus
Think of learning to drive. Reading the manual matters, but you also need practice behind the wheel.
Training begins with becoming a disciple yourself. Surrender. That's not trying harder, but training. Before you help someone follow Jesus, keep learning to walk with Him. Jesus’ Great Commission includes teaching people to obey everything He commanded (Matthew 28:18–20). The goal reaches beyond understanding a lesson to putting His words into practice. Be a coach on the side instead of a sage on the stage.
Think of learning to drive. Reading the manual matters, but you also need practice behind the wheel. Someone helps you notice what you missed, correct a mistake, and try again.
Spiritual training also brings instruction and practice together.
Scripture shapes how you respond to conflict, forgive an offense, use your resources, and love your neighbor.
First Timothy 4:7–8 calls believers to train themselves in godliness. This training does not earn God’s love. It is a response to His grace as we learn to live as people who belong to Him.
A MicroGroup of three or four people can provide a setting for this growth. As you study Scripture, pray, and speak honestly about your lives, you help one another move from hearing to obedience. A resource such as Discipleship Essentials can guide the conversation, while real relationships provide opportunities for encouragement and accountability.
Ask yourself: What truth is Jesus teaching me, and how will I practice it this week?
Equip by Helping Others Become Ready to Serve
Training and equipping overlap. Training emphasizes learning through practice; equipping emphasizes helping people become ready to carry responsibility. Ephesians 4:11–16 describes leaders equipping God’s people for service so that the body of Christ grows toward maturity.
Equipping also means making room for others to practice. In a MicroGroup, invite someone to guide a discussion, lead prayer, or explain a Scripture passage. Offer helpful feedback and walk alongside that person. Responsibility grows as confidence and character develop. The methodology of Discipleship Essentials is an internship model of instruction, rotating coaching, asking good questions, learning to listen.
Multiply by Handing Off What You Have Received
Multiplication happens when those you disciple begin helping others follow Jesus. Second Timothy 2:2 describes this movement: Paul instructs Timothy to entrust what he has learned to faithful people who can teach others. The passage points through four generations—Paul, Timothy, faithful people, and those they will teach.
A fruit tree provides a helpful picture. Its fruit nourishes people, and its seeds hold the possibility of more trees. In a similar way, disciplemaking looks beyond the growth of one group toward people who can nurture new groups.
Within GDI’s MicroGroup approach, participants can prepare to begin another MicroGroup as they grow. They can carry forward the practices they have experienced: studying Scripture, applying truth, praying, caring for one another, and helping others become disciplemakers. Multiplication requires patience, discernment, and continuing support as each person submits to God's Spirit leading.
Customize. People can disciple others in their own language and community, helping the gospel move through relationships they already share.
Let Grace Shape the Whole Process
What is driving our ministry?
That matters at every stage. If your value depends on how many people you train or how many groups multiply, people can become measures of your success. Rejection can feel like a threat to your worth.
Grace frees you to love people, speak truth gently, and continue faithfully when results are slow.
You can celebrate growth while remembering that God gives the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6–7). You can invite someone to follow Jesus without pressure or manipulation. You can offer practical care even when that person does not accept your message.
Begin with prayer. Keep learning to follow Jesus. Help another believer become ready to serve. Prepare that person to help someone else. The Lord who sends you also promises His presence (Matthew 28:20). As you train, equip, and multiply, let your deepest joy remain in Him.
