When the Waters Recede: Nepal Still Needs Our Help

We have worked together in partnership with GDI's National Director in Nepal over the past 12 years to make disciples. I received this urgent email from him last week.

Dear Dr. Greg,

I am writing this request letter with an urgency. 

Relief for Flood Victims in Nepal

On August 26, 2026 there was a massive flash flood because a glacier burst that claimed thousands of lives (still counting). Two significant towns were completely swept away, 19 bridges, and 9 hydroelectrical projects collapsed. Needs are endless.

In this time of need there is an opportunity for Christians to show God’s love to the people. Even though Christians are in the minority in our country their support in times such as these has been significant. Therefore, we would like to do something for the affected people. 

 Our goal is to raise about $30,000, God willing. 

Note: I have already initiated a response to some urgent needs such as purchasing clothes for 150+ women (most of them are naked due to being rescued from muds) and bought some medicines. 

Together, let us help Nepal take the next step from relief toward recovery. We each have different capacities, resources, and promptings to give to those in need.

What happened

On August 26, 2026, a devastating flash flood tore through communities along Nepal’s Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors. Water, ice, rock, and debris swept through villages, roads, bridges, and hydropower sites with terrifying force. Families were separated. Homes and livelihoods disappeared. Entire communities were left grieving while rescue teams searched for the missing.

As of September 2, authorities were still conducting search-and-recovery operations. Reuters reported more than 1,100 confirmed deaths in Nepal, with thousands still missing, while roads, bridges, power facilities, and communication networks remained badly damaged. Because the situation is changing rapidly, those numbers may rise. Behind every statistic is a person created in the image of God, a family waiting for news, and a community facing a long road home.

The flood may have happened
in a matter of minutes,
but recovery will take months and years.

A Disciplemaking Response to Human Need

Global Discipleship Initiative believes that disciplemaking is relational and intentional. We partner with local churches and indigenous leaders because they know their communities, understand the culture, speak the language, and remain present for the long work of recovery.

This approach reflects the heart of GDI’s DNA. We do not want only to deliver help to a community. We want to stand with faithful local leaders as they serve their neighbors with wisdom, compassion, and the hope of Christ.

Jesus never treated suffering people as interruptions. He saw them. He moved toward them. He met physical needs while revealing the love and kingdom of God. In the same way, disaster relief and disciplemaking should not be separated. A blanket, a meal, clean water, or help rebuilding a home can become a tangible expression of Christ’s love when offered humbly through trusted relationships.

Please Pray

Pray for those who are grieving and waiting for news. Pray for rescue workers, medical teams, government officials, church leaders, and volunteers. Pray for protection from disease, further flooding, and landslides. Pray that aid will reach isolated communities quickly and fairly. Pray that Nepal’s local believers will be strengthened to serve as the hands and feet of Jesus.

The waters have left a trail of destruction, but they do not have the final word. God can work through His people to carry provision into places of loss, companionship into places of grief, and hope into places that feel forgotten.
